"Taken Away"
by Richard Nathan
Before the lights come up, a voice announces the title of the story:
VOICE
"Taken Away."
TOM is breaking up with his latest girl friend over a cell phone. She's not taking it well.
TOM
Hey! ... Hey! Will you listen for a
minute? I'm sorry, but you knew I
wasn't a one woman man when we
started dating, right? ... What do you
mean, you didn't know? How could you
not know? ... Do I look like a one
woman man? ... Hey, no need to get
snotty. ... What? ... Well, yeah, I
did say I was looking for my soul mate,
but I never said I'd be faithful if I
found her. Hey, we both had fun,
right? So it's no big deal, right? ...
I...
A weird, bright, colored spotlight shines down on Tom. He looks up and sees something amazing.
TOM
Holy ....
Blackout accompanied by strange sounds. A few seconds later lights come up. TOM is unconscious on one side of the stage. AMBER, a beautiful young woman, is unconscious on the other side of the stage. She moans and then regains consciousness. She opens her eyes and looks around, horrified.
AMBER
Oh no! Oh no!
She sees Tom, runs to him, and shakes him.
AMBER
Hey! Hey! Hey!!!
Tom regains consciousness.
TOM
Huh? What? What happened?
He looks around, panics and scrambles away from her.
TOM
Who are you and what have you done?
AMBER
I'm Amber Fenton. Who are you?
TOM
Tom Carlin. Where am I?
AMBER
I think we're on a spacecraft.
TOM
Why would you think that?
AMBER
The last thing I remember is seeing a
spacecraft. What's the last thing you
remember?
TOM
Oh God. Oh God. I think we're on a space-
craft!
AMBER
You saw it too?
Tom struggles to remember.
TOM
I was outside, talking on my cell phone...
AMBER
You have a cell phone???
Tom looks down and sees the cell phone in his hand.
TOM
(not getting it)
Yeah. So?
AMBER
(exasperated)
You think you might want to try using
it?
He tries the cell phone, but it doesn't work.
TOM
We must be outside the calling area.
AMBER
Probably way outside.
TOM
(panicking)
Oh God.
AMBER
I need you to calm down.
TOM
But we've been taken away!
Amber puts her hand on Tom's shoulder and looks into his eyes, seeking to calm him. He notices she's a beautiful woman.
AMBER
I know. But we need to calm down if we're
going to do anything about this. We'll get
through it, okay? People are probably
looking for us right now. When you were on
the cell phone, did you say anything to the person
you were talking to?
TOM
My girlfriend.
AMBER
Did you say anything to her about what you saw?
TOM
My ex-girlfriend, really. We broke up. She
wanted to see other people.
AMBER
That's too bad, but I'm more interested in
whether you said anything to her about the
spacecraft.
TOM
I don't think so. I remember seeing it; I don't
remember anything after that.
AMBER
Do you see any doors in this place?
TOM
I was really hurt that my girlfriend wanted
to break up. What about you? Do you
have anyone in your life right now?
Amber can't believe what she's hearing.
AMBER
Was that a pick up line????
TOM
No! No! Of course not! No!
Although, we do have to consider
what's happening here. One man,
one woman, the only human beings
around.
AMBER
What are you saying?
TOM
Do you think it means anything that they
chose to take one man and one woman?
One of each, you know? They might have
something in mind.
AMBER
If they do, they can forget about it!
TOM
Sure. I agree a hundred percent!
I was just trying to figure out what
they had in mind.
AMBER
I don't mate with strangers.
TOM
Of course not. Who does? Maybe really
insensitive people, but not us. Not with
strangers. On the
other hand, we might be
here for a long time, so we won't stay
strangers.
AMBER
I think we need to concentrate on getting out
of here!
TOM
Maybe if we mate, they'll let us go. Maybe they
just took us because they want to see an Earth
couple mating, and after they see it, they'll
release us.
AMBER
Are you serious?
TOM
It's worth a try.
AMBER
Maybe they just want to see an Earth woman
commit homicide and after I do, they'll let me
go.
TOM
I'm sensing some hostility here. I'm not the
one who kidnapped you. Don't blame me
for this. And remember, you could have
been stuck with some guy a lot worse than me.
AMBER
I doubt that.
TOM
Hey, I may be the last man you ever see. So
unless you're gay or something, I'm going to
start looking pretty good to you. So why fight it?
You know what's going to happen, eventually.
One man, one woman! Do the math! Seriously,
how else do you think this could end up?
Tom gives her the eye and starts advancing on her. Weird lights and weird sound effects start. Blackout! The sound effects stop.
Lights come up an instant later and Amber is alone on stage. She looks around. The weird lights and weird sound effects come up again. Amber covers her ears. Another blackout! The sound effects stop.
The lights come up again. Tom is back on stage, lying in a fetal position, crying in pain and anger. Amber has no idea what is going on.
AMBER
What happened? Where did they take you?
Did they do something to you?
TOM
Taken away! ... Taken away!
We hear the voices of two aliens (a CHILD ALIEN and a FATHER ALIEN), although we do no see them.
CHILD ALIEN
(off stage)
Why did you do that, daddy?
FATHER ALIEN
(off stage)
He'll be a better pet now, better behaved.
CHILD ALIEN
(off stage)
But why'd you hurt him?
FATHER ALIEN
(off stage)
I didn't hurt him. I just had him fixed.
Blackout!
